Facilities Management | Process and Procedures for Disinfecting Offices

Amid the current COVID-19 crisis, there is still much to be learned about its spread. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),

“Current evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in community settings.”

Addressing Levels of Exposure

Exposure can be categorized in three levels which include no known exposure, possible exposure, and confirmed exposure. Even when there is no known exposure, it is best to treat the area as if it has been exposed and clean it accordingly.

Here are some guidelines for the cleaning and disinfecting of rooms and public areas aimed at limiting the survival of the coronavirus.

  • Use EPA-registered chlorine or peroxide-based cleaners to clean all hard and highly touchable surfaces, such as desks, counters, equipment, and flooring.
  • For businesses still in operation, clean surfaces twice daily.

Confirmed Exposure

For facilities with known COVID-19 exposure, it is important to contact the CDC for the most up-to-date recommendations. These recommendations may include the use of professional cleaning services and procedures using such things as ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection, Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP) mist fogger, personal protection equipment (PPE), and respiratory protection.
